Episode 020: Female Fridays with Melanie Connell

Are you ready for a new #FemaleFridays chat? This week, I had the opportunity to talk to Melanie Connell, owner of Remedy Physical Therapy in Costa Mesa, California. Melanie has been a licensed physical therapist for 20 years with certifications in manual therapy and nutritional health coaching. She launched Remedy Physical Therapy to provide comprehensive holistic care with empathy, education, and respect.

Treating people with persistent pain and injuries

When talking about the clients she treats for persistent pain and injuries, Melanie explained that their previous practitioners or diagnoses aren’t necessarily wrong, but “maybe just not fully complete, and/or they haven’t had enough time to actually listen to their full story.” That’s why listening is such an important part of the care she provides.

At Remedy Physical Therapy, Melanie mainly treats female athletes of all ages with chronic pain or persistent issues. She uses the term “athlete” broadly because she sees teens, older adults, and everyone in between who all want the same thing: to be active, to move their body, and pursue active hobbies, whether it’s hiking, kayaking, or playing team sports.

“You’re an athlete because you’re moving and you’re challenging yourself,” said Melanie.

Melanie and I also talk about the importance of self-advocacy in youth athletes, how much the menstrual cycle affects the body, and more, so tune in to the full episode to hear it all!

In this episode we discuss:

  • Who Remedy Physical Therapy serves and how
  • How Melanie got into physical therapy as a career and how she focused in on the types of clients she wanted to serve
  • Common issues that affect runners specifically
  • Male coaches and the importance of encouraging young female athletes to speak up and ask questions about their bodies
  • Why the menstrual cycle is such an important marker for physical health and how its absence can affect athletes
  • How and where you can contact Melanie
  • Rapid-fire question time!
